IN 2011 I spent a couple of weeks working with a collaborator at Chile's Universidad Catolica, in Santiago. This was mostly a working trip, but we took a weekend off to go day hiking in the Andes just outside the city, visit Valparaiso and the wine producing country toward the coast, and see some of the tourist sights of downtown Santiago. I'd particularly recommend the museum of pre-Columbian art (the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino). Although Santiago is not one of the "must see" cities in most people's minds, it's an easy place to visit as a tourist, with an excellent subway system, good restaurants, and a pretty relaxed atmosphere.
