Capitol Reef National Park in south-central Utah is the most easily accessed part of a large contiguous swathe of wilderness that includes Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and the Box-Death Hollow wilderness. The park was established as a National Monument in 1937 to protect an array of scenic canyons that lie along the region's signature geological feature - the Waterpocket Fold. Today, Utah's Highway 24 follows the Fremont river through the northern region of the park, offering a scenic drive and access to a number of mostly moderate difficulty day hikes. The southern section of the park, which can be accessed from the unpaved Notom-Bullfrog and Burr trail roads, is more remote and sparsely visited. The outstanding hike through Upper Muley Twist canyon is to be found here, along with a number of slot canyons that mostly require at least some technical ability to traverse. The main gateway town is the small community of Torrey, but you could also stay in the even smaller town of Boulder (convenient for also exploring the Death Hollow and Escalante wildernesses). Torrey is 213 miles south of Salt Lake City, 220 miles from Grand Junction in Colorado, and 350 miles from Las Vegas. The park is beautiful and as long as you don't expect too much from Torrey you won't be disappointed!
